MASTER OF INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS (MBA)

(UNIVERSITY OF EAST LONDON)

The MBA (International Business) is franchised from the University of East London and is taught on the campus of the School of Technology and Management. The teaching relationship between UEL and the School of Technology and Management (STM) is very close. Students are registered as UEL students from the beginning of the programme and have full access to the library, computing and social facilities of UEL. Students also have the opportunity to spend the third semester (Dissertation Semester) on the UEL campus.

It is easy for students to make use of the UEL facilities since the two institutions are geographically close. Further, UEL academic staff make inputs to each of the modules taught at STM. This ensures that students are aware of the teaching styles of the partner institution, understand the key themes of each module and have the opportunity to interact with UEL academic staff. This close relationship between the two institutions is a distinctive feature and particular strength of the franchised programme.

The MBA (International Business) is based on the recognition that international and global business skills and understanding are required if firms and their employees are to compete effectively and thus maximise the potential or their resources. The main emphasis is on leadership through strategic management where students are expected to ground their new knowledge within the base of their previous professional experience. Students are expected to reflect on and learn from prior experience and combine this with new knowledge to apply to new situations. The main aims of the programme are;

To facilitate the advanced study of organisations, their management and the changing external context in which they operate.
To develop knowledge and a critical understanding of key areas of management.
To develop a career in business and management through the application of critical and analytical skills at the appropriate level and to facilitate further research or study in the area.
To facilitate the application of knowledge and understanding of business and management to complex issues through critical and analytical approaches to management theory, practice and research.
To enhance the ability to evaluate management techniques, tools and models in a variety of contexts.
To recognise the relationship between ideas and practice.
To develop personal and interpersonal skills that are relevant to management.
To equip students with the necessary knowledge and skills to achieve the appropriate level of post graduate award and continue their lifelong learning development.

Entry Requirements	Application form and references (one academic, one work based) A first degree in any discipline at 2.2 or above. A minimum of two years work experience at a managerial or supervisory level An IELTS score of 6.5 or equivalent in the case of international students (applicants should have a minimum score of 6 in the writing component) Candidates may be interviewed where this is possible

The programme consists of four core 30 credit M-level modules and a 60 credit M-level dissertation module:

Teaching and learning methods used are varied. They are designed to encourage students to accept responsibility for their own learning, collectively as a group and individually. The programme hopes to promote independent study and the development of self-management skills.

There is a requirement for students to undertake set reading on certain topics and explore relevant literature for assignments and seminar discussions. Students are expected to demonstrate knowledge and skills gained through participation in seminar discussion and oral presentation.

The programme aims to have a high degree of participation, encouraging sharing of information, ideas, experience and values. Tutors expect students to use their knowledge and expertise to relate theory to practice in the context of their own work experiences.

The programme aims to develop an approach to learning which encourage the student to "transform" rather than simply to "reproduce" the theories and ideas to which have been introduced. Overall the intention is to enable the student to develop as someone who is proficient in the acquisition of relevant knowledge and skills in the various fields of management and who is committed to a critical understanding of their own learning and potential professionalism
